PFC James Spencer - July 27, 2010

Per Ed Wheeler:

The Township of Poland, Ohio will be dedicating the St. Rt. 224 Bridge in Honor of PFC James Spencer on September 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.

James Spencer's sister Pat would like to hear from others that knew her brother. Even if you did not know him, I am sure she would appreciate an Email anyway. Also any pictures of him that you may have in your collection.  Pat Spencer's Email address is inthetreez@yahoo.com.

A little background from Ed Wheeler:

James and I were in the same platoon in boot camp and continued in the same units until we reached Viet Nam. At that time we were assigned to the same Platoon in "A" Company 1st Amtrac Bn. That being the good old 3rd Platoon. After we arrived at Cua Viet we were in the same fire team, which some may remember carried the 30 cal machine gun off the amtrac. The team consisted of Mike Silverman, James Spencer ( who carried the tripod ), Mike Bittle ( the ammo), and myself ( the 30 cal ). On Operation Hickory II were did not carry the 30 cal but were a rifle team.

During Operation Hickory II, on July 14, 1967, we were sweeping the hill side of Hill 31 and received automatic weapons fire. James was KIA, Silverman and the platoon sgt were WIA.

Additional background from Mike Silverman:

To set the record straight, I was not wounded on that day. I was just below and to the left of Spencer when he went down from a barrage of machine gun fire.

Our Doc tried to reach Spencer first and he was wounded at least twice. Following that, our platoon sgt. tried to reach Spencer and he was shot multiple times.

I then rolled out and fired rapidly at the machine gun emplacement enabling Richie Haeg to run into the open where he landed on top of me as he fired his M 79 knocking the machine gun out. As I recall, we suffered a lot of casualites that day.
